Several brokerages limited trading in meme stocks at the height of the meme stock mania. In the second quarter of 2019, before the meme stock mania began, the company generated about $1.3 billion in net sales. The AMC stock sales have diluted the holdings of individual shareholders, and the market cap of AMC is still down more than 50% from its peak.

TORONTO (AP) — Think of movies about the financial system and your mind is almost sure to go to Gordon Gekko and “Wall Street” or Leonardo DiCaprio’s gyrating Jordan Belfort in “The Wolf of Wall Street.”When Hollywood takes on Wall Street, it usually heads straight to the C-suite. In 2021, Gill’s enthusiastic endorsement of GameStop stock helped fuel a viral trading frenzy that rocked Wall Street and humbled the hedge funds that has shorted the brick-and-mortar video game company. Gillespie was able to follow the phenomenon thanks to his 24-year-old son, who had been involved with the subreddit Wall Street Bets. Read moreBRISBANE, Aug 12 (Reuters) - Co-hosts Australia beat France 7-6 in a dramatic penalty shootout to reach the last four of the Women's World Cup for the first time after their quarter-final finished deadlocked at 0-0 following extra time on Saturday. "I would like to congratulate my players for the performance they pulled off today against the entire nation," said France coach Herve Renard. What a game, in normal time, in extra time and then during the penalty shootout." France weathered the storm triggered by the introduction of the Australia skipper, however, and their 19-year-old substitute Becho was soon threatening down the other end. Seven automakers plan to build an electric-vehicle charging network to take on Tesla. Seven car companies are making their own charging network to take on Elon Musk's Tesla Superchargers. Tesla, by comparison, has spent over a decade building out a vast network of charging stations specifically for its owners. And that network, which historically only allowed Tesla owners to plug in, has been a huge driver of Tesla sales. It sounds like the planned charging network aims to mimic some of the things Tesla got right, and add some extra conveniences.

MELBOURNE, July 24 (Reuters) - Talismanic captain Alexandra Popp scored a brace as Germany launched their bid for a third Women's World Cup title with a 6-0 demolition of debutants Morocco on Monday. I look forward to the next match, but today we want to be happy with what we did today. "As it stands we came across a team which was superior to our own -- David and Goliath," said Morocco coach Reynald Pedros. Whirling around in the box, Popp scored again in the 39th minute, Buehl's corner pinging off the back of her head. Lea Schueller completed the rout a minute before stoppage time, smashing in the sixth goal after team mate Lena Lattwein's attempt careened off the keeper.

Opinion: Messi mania meets USWNT three-peat fever

On the other side of the world in Auckland, the USWNT took down World Cup newcomer Vietnam 3-0. It was nonsense to worry about what to watch or whether Messi would upstage the women. MLS chief Don Garber, for one, says he’s not worried about the impact Saudi money could have on the ability of the MLS to expand into markets outside the US, especially as it failed to win Messi. Friday may have been the first time in his life that Messi was someone else’s opening act. The USWNT did what was expected, beating a lesser team in Vietnam, but they also have a lot of work in front of them.

Selipsky does work at a "big company" of course, but he doesn't want Amazon to feel that way. Pity the poor 7-footer. That’s the message of two new documentary series about storied basketball players: “The Luckiest Guy in the World,” about Bill Walton (available in the “30 for 30” hub at ESPN Plus), and “Goliath,” about Wilt Chamberlain (premiering Friday at Paramount+ and Sunday on Showtime). The sportswriter Jackie MacMullan delivers what could be a thesis statement for both in “Goliath”: “I’ve found that big men are much more sensitive than we realize.”Chamberlain, who died of heart failure in 1999, and Walton both have well-defined personas, which they participated in creating. It’s engagingly introspective and personal, in part because James pushes back against Walton’s incessant recitation of the title phrase. How can Walton call himself the luckiest guy in the world, James asks from behind the camera, when his career was utterly ravaged by injuries that eventually crippled him and drove him to consider suicide?

Microsoft (MSFT) updated plans to expand further into cybersecurity this week, creating chaos in pure-play vendors like Club name Palo Alto Networks (PANW). We think that decline was an overreaction and the bounce since shows that investors have come to realize that Microsoft's moves pose little threat to cybersecurity leader Palo Alto. Bottom line We believe Palo Alto will stay the cybersecurity leader regardless of Microsoft's announcement. Founded in 2005, Palo Alto has been in the space much longer than Microsoft, and it has a first-mover advantage. Wells Fargo is staying bullish on JPMorgan ahead of its earnings report premarket Friday — even as the stock keeps rising. Analyst Mike Mayo kept his overweight rating on the Jamie Dimon-led bank, calling it his top pick in the group. Wall Street's consensus estimate for 2023 earnings have increased by 13% since the start of the year, while peers have seen theirs fall by an average of 15%, Mayo said. "JPM exemplifies our 'Goliath is Winning' theme," Mayo said in a note to clients on Wednesday. And Mayo said the bank has shown greater resiliency given rising interest rates, the possibility of a recession and increased government regulation.

NEW YORK, June 28 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Most corporate acquisitions deteriorate over time, but Microsoft’s (MSFT.O) $26 billion deal for LinkedIn keeps getting better. Buying LinkedIn was a bold step for Satya Nadella, who became the software goliath’s third chief executive in early 2014. Paying a 50% premium for LinkedIn and its 430 million users made it one of the technology industry’s largest deals ever and by far Microsoft’s biggest. The war over the “Call of Duty” maker is just one of many things happening at Microsoft that’s overshadowing LinkedIn. Those market dynamics have buoyed LinkedIn, which was only generating $3 billion in revenue when Microsoft bought it.

She said a coffee supplier had told her that it would not do business with Blank Street. She overheard people complaining about Blank Street on the sidewalk outside her cafe. “With over 3,000 coffee shops in New York, any similarity with our brand is a complete coincidence,” Blank Street said in a statement on Tuesday. Blank Street declined to answer specific questions, including whether it was aware of a shop called Blank Slate when the company opened its two locations in that area. And other coffee shops with similar names are eager to distance themselves: The owners of Blank Coffee, a vegan cafe in London, said the businesses’ similar names might make customers think their cafe had “sold out.” In March, Blank Coffee formally opposed the registration of the Blank Street Coffee trademark in Britain.

OAKLAND, California, June 13(Reuters) - Silicon Valley-based AI chip startup SiMa.ai on Tuesday said it raised an additional $13 million from investors including a key fund in Taiwan called VentureTech Alliance, which has a strong strategic partnership with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW). This is at least the third investment in U.S. chip startups by VentureTech Alliance in the past month. British AI chip unicorn Graphcore's struggles have been widely reported. Then on Tuesday morning a drone attack on the Russian capital brought the conflict to Russian soil with fresh clarity. The aim here appears not to actually occupy Russian land – but to send a message to Putin and the Russian public that the Ukraine war is a waste of blood and treasure. What is perhaps likely in the short term, is that Russia will use a hybrid strategy to attack Ukraine and make life uncomfortable for the West. It is reasonable to assume that Putin will not end this war voluntarily, by submitting to a ceasefire or peace deal. And with the war he started getting uncomfortably close, I believe Putin’s days in office could be numbered as well.
